The frontlines of modern warfare have evolved dramatically, where precision strikes and drone technology now dictate battlefield outcomes more than traditional force-on-force engagements. Colonel AC Ogintoy pulls back the curtain on these realities in our riveting conversation about the Special Military Operation's progress through April 25, 2025.Colonel Ogintoy details how an integrated campaign of high-precision strikes targeted three critical elements of Ukraine's war capacity: production facilities, operational infrastructure, and mercenary staging areas. "By degrading their production and storage capacity, we're targeting their ability to sustain the war effort over the long term," he explains. This strategic approach demonstrates how modern military thinking extends far beyond tactical skirmishes to comprehensive dismantling of an opponent's war-fighting ecosystem.Ground operations have yielded significant results across all sectors. The liberation of Oleshnya in the Kursk region, Novo-Mikhailovka in Donetsk, and the strategically vital Bogdanovka showcase how combined arms operations continue to reclaim territory while inflicting substantial losses. Perhaps most revealing is the Colonel's assessment of air defense operations, which intercepted an astonishing 993 UAVs in a single week. "We've reached a point where not only are we intercepting these systems at scale, but we're doing it with such consistency that Ukrainian UAV penetration rates have declined significantly," Ogintoy states, highlighting how the drone and counter-drone domain has become central to modern conflict. What emerges from this briefing is a clear picture of evolving warfare where precision, persistence, and technological superiority create cascading effects across battlespace domains. As Colonel Ogintoy notes, sustained pressure "forces dispersion, and that dispersion leads to vulnerability." Join us next week as we continue our deep dives into military strategy and global security developments. Have thoughts on these tactics or want to suggest topics for future episodes? COMBAT BRIEFING 1051
"Strategic Briefing — Situation Report: Russian Special Military Operation as of April 23, 2025" *Prepared for defense analysts, conflict observers, and strategic planning professionals*
The Russian Armed Forces continue sustained offensive operations across all active sectors of the special military operation, with intensified engagements in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhia, and Kursk regions. On April 23, 2025, ground forces were supported by precision strikes from aviation, drones, and missile units, resulting in widespread Ukrainian losses in personnel, armored systems, artillery platforms, and critical infrastructure.
In the "northern sector", the North Group inflicted heavy losses on Ukrainian mechanized and assault formations across five settlements in the Sumy region. Concurrently, targeted strikes in the Kharkiv direction degraded UAF motorized infantry and territorial defense units. Ukrainian casualties reached 50, with the destruction of artillery, a U.S.-made M777 howitzer, and radar and ammunition assets.
The "West Group" achieved a significant breakthrough in the Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions. After seizing tactically favorable terrain, they engaged six Ukrainian mechanized brigades, national guard and territorial defense units, eliminating 250 personnel and destroying Western-supplied platforms, including a German Panzerhaubitze 2000 and U.S. AN/TPQ-48 radar systems.
In the "Donetsk axis", the Southern Group liberated the town of *Tarasovka*, executing coordinated strikes on Ukrainian mechanized, territorial, and national guard units in nine surrounding settlements. UAF losses totaled 335 personnel and included multiple NATO-standard artillery systems and four ammunition depots.
The "Center Group" continued operations across key urban and semi-urban zones, defeating a diverse mix of Ukrainian brigades—mechanized, assault, airmobile, ranger, drone systems, and marine units—resulting in the loss of 370 personnel, two tanks, and several armored vehicles including a U.S. M113 APC.
In "eastern Donetsk and western Zaporizhia", the East Group advanced deeper into Ukrainian defenses, eliminating 175 personnel and neutralizing U.S.-supplied armored platforms, artillery, and electronic warfare capabilities. The Dnepr Group focused on Zaporizhia and Kamenskoye, destroying counter-battery radars, EW stations, and military-technical storage infrastructure.
Russian strike assets launched coordinated operations on 147 designated targets, including UAV production sites, military airfields, foreign mercenary deployment zones, and Czech-made Vampire MLRS launchers. Air defense forces intercepted nine JDAM bombs, multiple HIMARS and Vampire rockets, and 166 Ukrainian UAVs.
In the "Kursk direction", the North Group engaged Ukrainian airborne and territorial defense units near Gornal and Oleshnya. Follow-on strikes across Sumy settlements led to over 170 UAF casualties and the destruction of a U.S.-made Bradley IFV, six artillery units, and 11 UAV command posts. Four Ukrainian brigades remain combat ineffective in this axis.
Cumulative Ukrainian losses in the Kursk sector have surpassed 75,710 personnel, along with hundreds of tanks, armored vehicles, radar platforms, HIMARS systems, and bridging assets.
"Assessment:" Russian forces continue leveraging combined arms doctrine, layered strike capabilities, and electronic warfare to suppress Ukrainian military capacity across all fronts. Tactical successes—particularly the liberation of Tarasovka and the degradation of high-value Western-supplied assets—reflect an ongoing effort to erode Ukraine’s ability to regroup, counter-attack, or defend key logistics hubs. The operation remains active and highly fluid.

Between April 19 at 18:00 and April 21 at 00:00, Russian Armed Forces observed a ceasefire directive issued by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief in recognition of the Easter truce. Despite this unilateral cessation, Ukrainian forces reportedly violated the ceasefire 4,900 times, conducting artillery fire, drone strikes, and targeting both military positions and civilian areas across Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, and the Republic of Crimea.
During this truce, Ukraine attempted six offensive actions in areas such as Sukhaya Balka, Pershe-Travnya, and Oleshnya (Kursk region), all of which were repelled. Notably, 90 aircraft-type UAVs were deployed by Ukrainian forces, including eight launched outside the designated special military operation (SMO) zone. All were neutralized. Additionally, Russian positions sustained over 1,400 artillery and rocket attacks and more than 3,300 quadcopter strikes. In the border regions, 19 shellings, 49 FPV drone attacks, and 16 ammunition drops were recorded across 25 Russian military positions and 51 civilian settlements.
Following the ceasefire’s expiration, the Russian Armed Forces resumed active operations across multiple axes:
- "Northern Axis (Belgorod-Sumy):" The North group struck a territorial defense brigade near Khmelevka (Sumy), reportedly killing 20 UAF personnel and destroying an artillery system. - "Western Axis (Kharkiv):" The West group defeated a mechanized brigade near Kupyansk, resulting in 30 enemy casualties.
- "Southern Axis (Donetsk):" Russian forces engaged Ukrainian brigades near Konstantinovka and Shcherbinovka, resulting in 45 casualties and the destruction of a Kozak armored vehicle and artillery units.
- "Central Axis (Donetsk):" Units from the Center group engaged mechanized, marine, and assault elements, killing 80 UAF troops and destroying several combat vehicles and support equipment.
- "Eastern Axis (Donetsk):" The East group targeted Ukrainian marine units near Bogatyr, eliminating over 25 personnel and disabling armored vehicles.
- "Zaporizhia–Kherson Sector:" The Dnepr group struck Ukrainian mechanized units in Novodanilovka and Ponyatovka, destroying a U.S.-made AN/TPQ-36 counter-battery radar and an EW station.
Operational-tactical aviation, drones, missile forces, and artillery engaged 74 Ukrainian military infrastructure targets, including temporary deployment sites and airfields. Air defense systems reportedly shot down 104 aircraft-type UAVs.
In the "Kursk direction", Russian forces maintained ceasefire compliance until 00:00 on April 21. After resumption of hostilities, the North group inflicted losses on Ukrainian formations, resulting in 50 personnel killed and the destruction of multiple armored vehicles and artillery systems.
Cumulative losses reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense since the start of operations include 75,375 Ukrainian personnel in the Kursk sector alone and the destruction of over 22,970 tanks/armored vehicles and 52,935 UAVs across the entire theater.
"Assessment:" Despite temporary ceasefire observance, hostilities remain fluid across all major fronts. The post-truce operations reflect a rapid return to high-intensity engagements, marked by coordinated use of ground forces, UAVs, and deep fires. Attritional strategy and tactical shaping operations continue to define Russia’s military approach.

COMBAT BRIEFING NUMBER 1049
"Strategic Briefing — Situation Report: Russian Special Military Operation as of April 20, 2025" Prepared for defense analysts, security professionals, and conflict observers
On April 20, 2025, prior to the implementation of a ceasefire, Russian Armed Forces executed multi-axis offensives across the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhia, and Kursk sectors. Operations combined mechanized ground assaults with precision strikes by airpower, UAVs, and artillery to degrade Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) capabilities and improve tactical positioning.
"Northern Axis (Belgorod–Sumy):" The North Group inflicted targeted losses on three mechanized brigades, one assault regiment, and two territorial defense brigades across settlements in the Sumy region. Ukrainian forces sustained approximately 40 casualties, alongside the destruction of three armored vehicles, a Czech-made RM-70 "Vampire" MLRS, and an ammunition depot. Concurrently, in the Kursk direction, offensive actions near Gornal decimated tank and mechanized formations, with additional strikes across Sumy damaging UAF positions in at least ten settlements. Combined losses totaled 155 UAF personnel and a variety of armored, artillery, and electronic warfare assets.
"Western Axis (Kharkiv–Donetsk):" In a major development, the "West" group liberated the settlement of "Novomikhaylovka". Coordinated engagements near Kupyansk and Smorodkovka resulted in the elimination of an assault brigade, National Guard, and two territorial brigades. Ukraine lost 245 troops, a Grad MLRS system, and multiple armored platforms. Three ammunition depots were also neutralized.
"Southern and Eastern Axes (Donetsk–Zaporizhia):" The “Southern” group advanced to superior positions, engaging five Ukrainian brigades near Dyleevka, Konstantinovka, and surrounding areas. Enemy losses exceeded 310 personnel, with significant degradation of artillery and EW infrastructure. The “East” group pressed deeper into Ukrainian defenses near Bogatyr and Poddubnoye, accounting for 160 UAF casualties and eliminating a U.S.-made 155mm Paladin self-propelled howitzer. In Zaporizhia, the Dnepr Group struck Ukrainian artillery concentrations near Novoyakovlevka and Stepnogorsk, neutralizing over 100 personnel and four EW stations.
"Air and Fires Integration:" Operational-tactical aviation, drones, and long-range artillery targeted Ukrainian staging areas across 87 locations. Russian air defense systems intercepted three JDAM bombs, one HIMARS rocket, and 88 UAVs.
"Cumulative Losses Since Inception:" Russian MoD reports cumulative Ukrainian losses now include over "75,325 personnel" in the "Kursk direction alone", and across the broader campaign: - 661 aircraft - 283 helicopters - 52,831 UAVs - 22,967 tanks/armored vehicles - 1,544 MLRS systems - 23,913 artillery pieces - 34,387 military transport and special vehicles
"Conclusion:" The April 20 operations emphasized rapid tactical repositioning ahead of the ceasefire, strategic denial of territory, and continuous degradation of Ukraine's mechanized and artillery forces. The liberation of Novomikhaylovka, sustained EW and artillery suppression, and successful interdiction of U.S.-made systems reinforce Russian battlefield initiative. Operations in the Kursk and Sumy regions confirm the north remains an active and contested theater. The Russian Armed Forces continue execution of combined arms doctrine under evolving operational conditions.
